Leisure Activities around La Roque-Gageac, Perigord
Sarlat-la-Canéda, more commonly known as Sarlat, is a medieval town, and the capital of the Périgord Noir. It is located in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and more precisely in the pretty department of Dordogne, on the borders of the Causses du Quercy.
With its history dating back to the Middle Ages, Sarlat has an exceptional heritage in store for you. It is one of the most beautiful towns in France, with no less than 66 listed monuments: Convent of the Order of Notre-Dame, Old Sainte-Marie Church, Town Hall …
“The Prehistoric Cave of Wonders” discovered on October 16, 1920 in Rocamadour in the Lot, has been classified as a Historic Monument since May 16, 1925, by the presence of its wall paintings dating from around 25,000 years.
This natural cave, located on the Rocamadour plateau, opens onto the Alzou canyon, in the heart of the Causses du Quercy regional park.
The prehistory and history of a troglodyte site unique in the world.
Remarkable for its powerful forms, its number of habitats and its age of occupation by man, this site constitutes a setting of rare and wild beauty.
This veritable wall of limestone, one kilometer long and 80 meters high, constantly undermined by the river and the frost, has hollowed out a hundred rock shelters and long aerial terraces.
These natural cavities have been occupied by humans since prehistoric times and then modified to become a fort and a city from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the Renaissance.
The Gouffre de Padirac is a monumental natural cavity located 11km as the crow flies (17km by car) from Rocamadour. It is, among the caves and chasms, the most emblematic and the 1st underground site in France. The orifice is 35 meters in diameter and the chasm plunges 75 meters from the surface of the causse. At the bottom, 103 meters underground, flows the Padirac river which flows in a network of galleries of more than 40km!
Just over 1 km of galleries are open to the public. The route begins on a boat maneuvered by a boatman. The visit allows you to successively discover the Grande Pendeloque, a stalactite over 60 meters long, suspended above the Rainy Lake, the Gours Lake (succession of natural dams) and the Grand Dome Room, 94 meters under the ceiling. !!!
In the heart of the Périgord Noir, the castle of Castelnaud, built on a rocky outcrop, offers a magnificent panorama over the Dordogne valley. Founded in the 12th century, it is a perfect example of medieval fortification. It now houses an important collection of weapons and armour. On the bastion, the most powerful siege machines of the Middle Ages are recreated in attack position.
For the first time, Lascaux reveals itself entirely. A complete and unpublished replica traces the discovery of the famous decorated cave. But the adventure does not end there: the entire visit questions Lascaux’s place in cave art and its relationship with contemporary creation. Lascaux 4 marks the beginning of a new adventure combining the emotion of an ancestral art and technological prowess.
In the heart of the Périgord Noir, very close to Sarlat, come and discover 10 hectares of plant sculptures. A unique example of Topiary Art in France with new increasingly colorful universes: visit the 7 gardens as you wish and enjoy a walk in the middle of nature on the 200 hectare forest estate.
The calendar of events in the Dordogne Valley features a variety of activities.
