THE SITE
Burgundy Vezelay Balloon Ride : a village perched on the eternal hill
Considered one of the most beautiful villages in France, Vézelay is unmissable in more than one respect and this reputation has not been tarnished.
Centre of Christianity since the Middle Ages with its famous Sainte-Marie-Madeleine basilica, restored by Viollet-le-Duc, perched on the hill of pilgrims, the whole is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The view of the Burgundy countryside from the basilica is impressive, but it becomes breathtaking from the basket of a hot air balloon. The juxtaposition of fields and forests to the foothills of the Morvan, form extraordinary paintings, sometimes brought to life by the presence of game. We then feel privileged to enjoy such a unique point of view, far from the cohort of tourists in a hurry. We also understand why the region has responded for centuries to the quest for spirituality and inspiration from religious and artists. It is not surprising, therefore, that Vézelay has since been one of the main points of departure for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela via the Via Lemovicensis.
A few hundred meters from the ground, nature reclaims its rights and gives meaning to our history.

It is a set of extremely rich natural environments, where various types of forest and dry limestone lawns stand side by side. This mosaic of environments is conducive to many species of flora and fauna.
The presence of vines in Vézelay dates back to Gallo-Roman times. At its peak, in the 18th century, the vineyard covered 500 hectares. But the arrival of phylloxera in 1884 caused terrible damage and the vineyard was almost completely destroyed.
By the end of the 1960s, there was only one or two hectares left under cultivation. Relaunched in 1973 by a dozen volunteer winegrowers, Vézelay then experienced a renaissance that developed over the years. Thanks to the work of the winegrowers and their shared passion, the area currently planted is of the order of 100 ha. This now recognized vineyard was awarded the Village designation in 2017. It therefore has everything a great! Visits and tastings are possible.
On a rocky escarpment locally called “Le Moutier”, the parish church dominates the village, La Cure and the main road. Neighboring Vézelay, it was the starting point of one of the four great routes of St Jacques de Compostela, listed by Unesco as a world heritage site.
